Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (also known as HPAI, H5N1, bird flu) has been found in wild birds in New Jersey. While the risk to the general public is low, precautions are advised.

Recreational Area Use: NJDOH does not recommend closing parks, beaches, or outdoor areas due to HPAI detection but advises limiting access to areas with dead birds or significant fecal contamination.

Precautions for Public Health:

• Avoid Contact: Avoid handling sick or dead birds, approaching waterfowl, or touching contaminated surfaces.
• Reporting: Report sick or dead birds to NJDEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife (1-877-WARNDEP).
• Hygiene: Wash hands after potential exposure and clean clothing and footwear before contact with domestic animals.
• Pets: Keep dogs leashed and away from contaminated areas; keep cats indoors as they are highly susceptible.
• Public Notification: Signs, websites, and other channels should inform visitors about HPAI presence, risk level, and precautions.
