Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission (NWBRHC) has proudly served the community since its founding in 1957. The Commission serves as the health department of Midland Park and Waldwick. Through contracted agreements, we extend services to the following municipalities: Allendale (Vital Statistics only), Emerson, Fair Lawn, Franklin Lakes, Hillsdale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Montvale, River Vale, Saddle River, Township of Washington, and Westwood.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a meaningful time to highlight the importance of responsible alcohol consumption. Whether you are serving alcohol or consuming it, doing so responsibly can help prevent harm and, ultimately, save lives.
It’s important to understand the risks associated with excessive alcohol use. According to the CDC, this includes:
- Binge drinking: 5 or more drinks on a single occasion for men, or 4 or more for women
- Heavy drinking: 15 or more drinks per week for men, or 8 or more for women
- Any alcohol consumption by individuals under age 21 or pregnant women
Excessive alcohol use is linked to serious health and safety risks, including:
- Violence and injuries (including motor vehicle crashes)
- Sexual risk behaviors
- Alcohol poisoning
- Cancer and liver disease
- High blood pressure
- Alcohol use disorder
If you’re going out and plan to drink, be sure to arrange a safe ride home ahead of time. With so many options available—Uber, Lyft, a taxi, or even a call to a sober friend—getting home safely is easier than ever. Drinking and driving is a gamble that you just can’t win.
